The word covenant connotes a covering; it gives you security and protection from
something evil as long as the terms of the covenant is obeyed. Every covenant
comes with its terms; it’s like a contract. For instance, the Jews walked in blessings
and God’s protection when they obeyed the Law of the covenant but failure to
obey God’s commandment led to great suffering, it was called the curse of the Law.
The New covenant gave birth to the Christian, this covenant is the covenant of
love. There are those who have been wrongly taught to believe that because of
Grace they can go on living anyhow and there wouldn’t be any consequences. This
is not true; it’s a lie from the pit of hell.
The New covenant is a covenant of love. You are not just advised to love your
fellow brethren but obligated to love.
When you become a Christian, you are made a member of the body of Christ. In
the body, every member is responsible for another. Be careful how you treat other
members of the body of Christ
There are certain in-house judgments that go on periodically against members
injuring the body of Christ. Not many preachers will tell you what I just said but it
is true. Be careful how you live as a Christian. How you live in the body is very
important. Paul said,
“ Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God
dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy;
for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are........1 Corinthians 3:16-
17KJV”
The Christians at Corinth were not walking in love and Paul had to warn them.
He explained to them why many were falling sick and dying prematurely. It was
because they were not dwelling in love. Paul said,
“For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if
we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged,
we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the
world........ 1 Corinthians 11:30-32KJV”
These folks were eating the communion whilst not walking in love, this was an act
contrary to what the communion stood for hence Paul said, you drink damnation
to yourself, not understanding the Lord’s body.
It matters understanding the spiritual significance behind what you do in Church.
Over the years, I have found out that many churches carry out ordinances and
sacraments not really understanding their spiritual implications. It’s very sad. God
is not a God of the flesh; He is not interested in the act but the spiritual
significance.
Christianity is not a license to live anyhow, there are rules that govern the
Christian life and it’s important to examine yourself whether you are living in
accordance with such rules.
Paul says,
“For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged”
Its imperative for the Christian to have moments of reflections where you examine
yourself whether you are living according to the Christian culture, a culture bound
by love and faith. You cannot be living like the world.
