Matthew 6:33KJV
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.
The attitude and way of life of the Jews in their relationship with God under
Judaism becomes a picture of how true Christianity ought to be.
From the exodus from Egypt to their stay in the land of promise, their lives were
built around their system of worship and religion.
They were career men and craftsmen yet their central locus and focus had to do
with their system of religion. Their lives were built around that religion. The
religion was not a side thing but their main theme for living, for their existence.
God was at the center. You will observe this important fact in your study of the
Old Testament. Their lives were built around the commandments, ordinances,
appointments, convocations, feasts and festivals. These took the center stage of
their lives. God planned it so. The Jew may have been a physician, a fisherman, a
soldier in the army but Judaism was central to his life. Due to this, the very
uneducated was very much acquainted with that way of life in Judaism.
The sad thing is that this is not what you find with some Christians, the opposite
has become the order of their lives. They have made their careers the main thing
and the Church the side thing. The Church rather has become the addition, the
add on. So they rather try to find time for Kingdom activities and purposes. They
will have to consider their leisure time to see if they can get time for Church and
Kingdom work. This is not wisdom.
As a Christian, you have to understand that as far as God is concerned, you are in
this world primarily because of the Kingdom purposes and plan. The day that Jesus
returns which is very soon (about a decade from now), He Jesus is not going to ask
us about careers, university degrees, buildings or how much money we could
accumulate. He will ask you about the Kingdom work that He left you on this
earth to do. This is how every Christian is going to be assessed. In this Kingdom work, there are certain responsibilities which are common to all Christians (like
evangelism) and others differing from one to the other. These are what you are
going to give an account on. Not only these but how your life on earth glorified
the Kingdom. Jesus said,
“ For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and
gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the
porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the
house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the
morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you
I say unto all, Watch..... Mark 13:34-37KJV”
Jesus says, I say unto all. Apparently this work that Jesus talked about was not
careers and jobs because even though Peter, Andrew, James and John were
fishermen, we don’t find them returning to engage in this work following the
departure of the Master to Heaven. What they went forth doing then give us an
understanding of the work that Jesus was talking about.
Beloved! Put important things in first place and let side things be side things.
Don’t interchange. Jesus said,
“(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father
knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of
God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto
you....Matthew 6:32-33KJV”
All the things that the world also seeks after are the side things. Do unbelievers go
to school, do they ride cars, do they build houses, are they also doctors, lawyers,
engineers etc etc? These are the side things; don’t make them the main things.
